Motor Courts and Circular Driveways: Designing a Grand Bay Area Entry Without Wasting Space

2026-11-07 · Bayview Landscape Co.

For luxury homes in Saratoga, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, and Cupertino, the driveway is not just a path from the street to the garage. It is an arrival experience, a functional vehicle management system, and a significant contributor to curb appeal. Motor courts and circular driveways represent the highest expression of driveway design—they solve real functional problems while creating an unmistakably estate-level impression.

Motor Courts: The Most Functional Luxury

A motor court is a paved courtyard area, typically positioned between the street and the garage, that provides room to park multiple vehicles, turn around without backing into traffic, and unload guests and deliveries without congesting the driveway. On properties where the garage faces the street and the lot is wide enough to accommodate a true court—roughly sixty feet of frontage or more—a motor court eliminates the awkward back-and-forth maneuvering that most residential driveways require.

Motor courts can be designed as formal symmetrical spaces with a central feature (fountain, planting island, or sculptural element) or as more casual open-plan surfaces. In either case, the paving material choice defines the character. Tumbled travertine, thermal-finished granite, large-format concrete pavers, and cobblestone-look permeable pavers are all used in estate motor courts throughout Los Altos Hills and Saratoga.

Circular Driveways on Standard Lots

True circular driveways require substantial frontage—typically at least eighty feet—to function properly and not look forced. On standard residential lots in Los Altos or Cupertino where frontage may be sixty to eighty feet, a true circle often isn't practical. The alternative is a crescent or D-shaped layout: the driveway enters from one side of the property, loops past the front entrance, and exits on the other side. This accomplishes the same functional goal—a continuous pull-through without backing—in a more compact footprint.

The landscaped island inside a crescent or circular drive is one of the most prominent planting spaces on any property. It is visible from the street, surrounds the main entry approach, and sets the tone for the landscape design. Common approaches include a single large specimen tree underplanted with low ground cover for a clean, formal look; a layered planting with a center tree, mid-height shrubs, and flowering perennials for a more naturalistic effect; or a water feature as the focal point for a truly estate-level statement.

Paving Width and Radius

A driveway or motor court that looks good and functions well requires minimum clear widths and turning radii that are often underestimated in initial designs. A single-lane driveway should be at least twelve feet wide, with fourteen feet preferred for comfort. A two-lane section allowing simultaneous entry and exit needs at least twenty feet. Turning radius for a standard passenger vehicle is approximately eighteen to twenty feet inside curb to inside curb for a comfortable turn without multi-point maneuvering.

Failing to build in adequate radius is one of the most common mistakes in driveway design. A circular drive that requires a three-point turn to navigate defeats the purpose. Plan for the vehicles that actually use the property—including delivery trucks, catering vans, and guest vehicles that may be larger than what the homeowner drives—when setting dimensions.

Grade Considerations on Hillside Properties

Most properties in the target communities sit on terrain with meaningful grade changes from street to house. A motor court or circular drive on a hillside lot requires careful grading to create a level or near-level parking and maneuvering surface without creating excessive cut-and-fill that triggers grading permits. It also requires a drainage plan: a large paved surface concentrates stormwater, and without proper grading, drains, and drainage structures, that water will find the least-resistant path to somewhere you do not want it.
