Fire and Water: How Fire Pits and Water Features Elevate Your Outdoor Space
2026-11-07 · Bayview Landscape Co.
Of all the elements that can be added to a Bay Area luxury landscape, fire features and water features have the most immediate and consistent impact on how the space feels to be in. Fire draws people together. Moving water creates sound that masks street noise, wind, and other ambient distractions. Together, they transform a beautiful landscape into an experience—and in a region where outdoor living is possible through most of the year, that experience becomes a daily part of home life.
Fire Features: Options and Considerations
The most common fire features in South Bay residential landscapes are fire pits and fire tables. A fire pit—a circular or rectilinear firebox set into or above the paving surface, surrounded by seating—creates a natural gathering point that encourages conversation and extends outdoor use into cool evenings. A fire table combines the fire element with a table surface for drinks, plates, and candles, integrating the fire into the dining or seating experience rather than making it a separate destination.
Gas fire features are by far the most practical choice for most Bay Area clients. They ignite instantly, produce consistent flame height, can be adjusted or extinguished immediately, and require no wood storage or ash management. Modern gas fire features using concrete or ceramic fire glass produce a visually dramatic, clean-burning flame that reads as more sophisticated than a traditional campfire aesthetic.
Wood-burning fire features are subject to Spare the Air restrictions in the Bay Area. When a Spare the Air Spare day is called, wood burning is prohibited. For clients who entertain regularly, a gas feature that can be used any day regardless of air quality conditions is typically the more practical choice.
Fire Zone Restrictions
Properties in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones—which include substantial portions of Saratoga, Los Gatos, and Los Altos Hills—face additional restrictions on open-flame features. Gas fire features in VHFHSZ areas must comply with California Fire Code setback requirements from structures, vegetation, and property lines. The local fire district (Santa Clara County Fire for most South Bay communities) reviews fire feature installations in fire hazard zones. Automatic shut-off valves and in some cases spark arrestors may be required.
Water Features: Sound, Movement, and Connection
Water features in residential landscapes range from simple recirculating bowl fountains to naturalistic pondless waterfalls to formal reflecting pools. The right choice depends on the design context, the maintenance budget, and what the feature is being asked to do in the space.
Pondless waterfalls—systems where the water cascade terminates in an underground reservoir rather than an open pond—are the most popular water feature in California residential landscapes for several reasons. They require no open water maintenance (no algae, no mosquito management), have no safety risk for small children, and produce excellent sound. A well-designed pondless waterfall in a hillside garden can sound convincingly like a natural stream.
Formal reflecting pools are at the other end of the aesthetic spectrum: still, geometric, and visually oriented rather than auditory. They work best in formal or contemporary landscape contexts and require consistent maintenance to stay clear.
Combining Fire and Water
A fire-and-water combination—a water feature that incorporates a gas flame, or a fire pit positioned adjacent to a water feature—creates one of the most striking effects in contemporary outdoor design. The contrast of fire's warmth and movement against water's coolness and stillness is elemental, and when it is executed well, it makes a space feel genuinely extraordinary. The key is allowing each element enough physical space to be experienced independently as well as together.
